Scandia Shores’ visitors will find a welcoming community of active seniors nestled into picturesque suburban woodlands where residents stroll the Snail Lake trail or enjoy a chef-prepared meal in the inviting Scandia Room, with large windows looking out on the grounds.

Residents say Scandia Shores is much more than a place to hang your hat; their input is valued in all aspects of life, from Resident Council to monthly meetings with the chef, to religious programs organized by the Spiritual Care Team, to recreational, social, educational and cultural activities.

“There is a high level of participation in spiritual activities,” Chaplain Sherree Lane says.

Sherree has served the Avinity communities (formerly Twin City Christian Homes), a management company overseeing 12 senior living communities in Minnesota, since 2011 and says she’s really found her niche.

“I really enjoy working with senior adults; I seem to come alive. I love to listen to their stories and I enjoy being with them. When I’m with seniors I feel I don’t have anything to prove, I can just be there for them.”

Sherree has a musical background and organized a choir last fall. She says the residents’ musical experiences vary, some having sung in church, school or community choirs, and others who just love singing.

They sing at Scandia Shores’ nondenominational chapel service once a month and even did a show for the annual Christmas party.

There is also a weekly Bible study, where the group recently watched a video-based curriculum titled, “Revealing the Mysteries of Heaven.” Sherree says the topic was so popular she had to hold additional viewings.

Last year they also held a 13-week GriefShare program, a video seminar and discussion group. Co-led with pastoral nurse Lori Anderson, Sherree says the program is very positive and helps people move through the process of grieving and learn tactics to deal with loss.

Lori explains that pastoral nursing is a specialty that integrates health and spirituality. She has been at Scandia Shores for 10 years and says, “I think what makes this community unique is that when you walk in the doors, you immediately feel a sense of welcome and family, love and care.”

Lori holds free blood pressure clinics, a prayer circle and prayer shawl ministry, and “Coffee with the Pastoral Nurse,” a health education time where residents can join in and ask questions about health topics.

In addition to residents’ spiritual well being, Scandia Shores now offers no-cost fitness programs from Live2BHealthy. Regional owner Greg Springman says the classes have been well received.

“At Scandia we have between 18 and 25 participants attending consistently, three days a week. I’ve seen phenomenal results from this group; they’re very dedicated and it shows in their assessment results,” he says.

They tailor classes to fit individual needs focusing on improving balance, strength, stamina and mobility. Partnered with Silver Sneakers and Silver&Fit, they welcome people in the area, age 55 and older, to stop by and try the classes. They’re a great way for seniors interested in a more carefree lifestyle and curious about Scandia Shores to meet the residents already in the community.

The complex’s 104 beautifully laid out one -and two-bedroom rental apartments have full kitchens and ample closet space, and all are reasonably priced. The facility offers a full-service meal program with two onsite chefs and numerous wait staff, as well as scheduled transportation to shopping, restaurants and medical appointments on the Scandia Shores’ bus.

With a full activity program, a fitness center, walking paths, a U-shaped courtyard and landscaped grounds, Scandia Shores is the perfect place for seniors to enjoy both an active lifestyle and the tranquility of nature.
