A West St. Paul woman has been awarded the coveted 2013 McKnight Artist Fellowships for Writers.
Susan Koefod is the author of the Arvo Thorson mystery series. Her debut novel “Washed Up” introduced readers to the alcoholic, prickly investigator and was praised for its “gorgeous prose” by Library Journal. The second novel in the series, “Broken Down,” is set around a murder on a swing bridge bearing a striking resemblance to the former Rock Island swing bridge in Inver Grove Heights. Koefod is an Inver Grove Heights native, and both of her published books contain thinly concealed landmarks from the area.

On Saturday, June 8, part of East Seventh Street is getting a makeover. Temporarily, at least.
Volunteers will use temporary materials to create bike lanes, widen the sidewalk, add crosswalks, throw up murals and sculptures, and erect businesses between Margaret and Arcade as a sort of street betterment workshop.
The Better Block project is open to the public from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 8. It will be located on East 7th Street between Margaret and Arcade.

Summer’s well on its way. And with it, schools clear out, and kids have more free time to roam.
Most St. Paul Public Schools are out June 7, and historically, that has meant large groups of youngsters hanging out past the curfew on the East Side.
