RAHS names new boys hockey coach

When Jeff Whisler took over as the activities director at Roseville Area High School in the summer of 2012, his first major order of business was to find a boys hockey coach. A year later, Whisler spent the early part of the summer finalizing the hiring of another coach for that position.

Whisler announced on July 5 that Ryan Adams had accepted the offer of the position of Roseville’s boys hockey head coach. Adams takes over the head varsity job after serving as the junior varsity head coach last season.

“Ryan brings, enthusiasm, knowledge and the proper skill set to continue the long tradition of Roseville Raider boys hockey,” Whisler said

Adams replaces Pete Aus, who coached one season following the resignation of Jeff Pauletti in the spring of 2012.

Prior to coming to Roseville last season, Adams was an assistant coach at Legacy Academy for one year and before that spent four years as an assistant at Bethel University.

Adams played high school hockey at Litchfield, where he also ran cross country and played baseball. He played two years of junior hockey before enrolling at Bethel. While with the Royals, Adams was a two-time captain, an all-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection and led the MIAC in scoring during his sophomore season.

In addition to coaching, Adams teaches physical education in the Forest Lake school district.

Aus stepped down following the 2012-13 season. He was hired by Whisler late last summer and brought in Adams as an assistant. Aus replaced Pauletti, who resigned in order to give his side of the story in regards to an investigation conducted by the school district into alleged player abuse and financial questions.

For Aus, the Roseville job was the second interim position he had taken in two seasons. Aus stepped in as the varsity girls hockey coach at Mounds View High School after Tom Foley resigned seven games into the 2011-12 season.

Aus has had a long and distinguished coaching career, which has also included stints at Bethel University, Minnetonka, Litchfield, Willmar, St. Cloud Tech and Blaine. He is also an assistant girls lacrosse coach at Roseville under his daughter Sonja Hoffman.

Aus graduated from St. Paul Murray High School and attended St. Olaf College, where played football and hockey and graduated with a degree in physical education. His first coaching position was also in Roseville as the junior varsity hockey coach at Kellogg High School.

New Nordic ski coach, too

Whisler’s summer hiring wasn’t limited to hockey. He also announced the hiring of Doug White as Roseville’s Nordic ski racing coach.

White, who replaces Kevin Brochman, served as an assistant under Brochman last season.

In other coaching news, longtime assistant track and Nordic ski coach Fred Kueffer has retired from both coaching and teaching at Roseville.
