Mounds View fastpitch ready for new season

The rotten weather in 2013 forced the Mounds View High School fastpitch softball team to play its entire season in the span of three weeks. This yearís team would like the season spread out a bit in order to get more practice time between games.

Head coach Frank Roth has a group of veterans who will need help from some newcomers in order to reach this year’s goals.

“We expect to be very competitive,” said Roth, who is in his 11th season as head coach of the Mustangs. “Our goals are to be a focused, disciplined team that strives to make our teammates better every day.”

Mounds View returns four starters and nine total letterwinners.

Leading the way for Mounds View this spring are tri-captains Carissa Struve, Ashley Linn and Jacky Volkert. Struve, a senior, is the Mustangs’ main pitcher; Linn should be a leader at the plate and in the field; and Volkert possesses power at the plate and strength at the catcher position.

Some positions will be taken up by players who have yet to experience varsity competition, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be expected to contribute right away.

“We have a mix of young athletes that we are looking for development and big achievements from,” Roth said.

Forest Lake is the two-time defending Suburban East Conference champion and is considered a favorite again this spring. The Rangers have qualified for the past six Class AAA state tournaments. Roth also noted that East Ridge appears to have an up-and-coming team.

“We are looking to compete with the top teams in the conference,” Roth said. “Forest Lake and East Ridge look to be the early front-runners.”

Mounds View is set to open its schedule this week, assuming last week’s snowfall melts in time. Among the games on this week’s docket for the Mustangs is a home game against Stillwater on Friday. Mounds View hosts PACT Charter in a non-conference game on Saturday afternoon. Games at Forest Lake and Park-Cottage scheduled for early in the week were postponed and makeup dates had yet to be announced as of press time for this edition of the Bulletin.

The PACT Charter game is one of only two non-conference games on Mounds View’s schedule this season. The other is May 16 at home against New Ulm.
