Mounds View boys hockey hoping to avoid slow start

Coming off a year of streaks, both good and bad, the Mounds View High School boys hockey team would like to see more consistency as it heads into the 2014-15 season. Last season, the Mustangs struggled early before making a nice run in the middle of the schedule, but ultimately couldn't overcome its early problems.

"We got off to a very rough start (last season) but the boys played much better in the second half of the season," said fourth-year head coach Rick Thomas.

Mounds View opened its season on Saturday night with a non-conference game against Cloquet-Esko-Carlton, and for two periods it appeared that the Mustangs were in for a positive beginning. Mounds View built a 4-0 lead and still led by three at the start of the third period.

Things turned sour in the third, however, as C-E-C scored three times to tie it before winning in overtime.

Senior captain Austin Ramirez led Mounds View with a four-point night as he tallied two goals and two assists. Evan Mattson added two assists and Alex Plasencia and Dayton Honkanen both scored single goals.

Now Mounds View has a week of no games to put the tough loss behind it and get ready for a busy first week of December. The Mustangs host Irondale on Dec. 2, open Suburban East Conference play at Park-Cottage Grove on Dec. 4 and return home to host White Bear Lake on Dec. 6.

Thomas expects the Suburban East Conference to be a grind each and every game.

"I'm a firm believer that the SEC is a very tough conference," Thomas said. "There is a lot of talent in this conference which makes it tough night in and night out."

Honoring Lavalle

In addition to being the season opener, Saturday's game also featured a ceremony in which former Mustang Josh Lavalle's jersey was retired. Lavalle, a 2013 graduate of Mounds View and a former hockey captain, died of leukemia on Oct. 7. He was diagnosed during the summer before his senior year at Mounds View and ended up playing only one game that season.
