Boatswain's Mate Seaman Jaymz Culver of Mounds View removes a line from a capstan on USS John C. Stennis' fantail in North Island, California. The ships comprising the John C. Stennis Strike Group (JCSSG) recently participated in a Group Sail exercise designed to develop coordinated capabilities.

Erik Katovich of New Brighton, a University of Minnesota Honors Program student and Economics major, recently received a Fulbright Award to help fund his economic research in Brazil. The Fulbright Program was created and funded by Congress in 1946 to promote international good will through the exchange of students and scholars in all areas of education, culture, and science.

Mark Kenney, a teacher, coach and dean and athletic director at St. Charles Borromeo School in St. Anthony, was recently awarded the Minnesota Independent School Forum's Honor Teacher Award.

Shoreview native Abigayle Roemer has been elected to Lawrence University's chapter of Pi Kappa Lambda, a national honor society for students with exceptional musical and scholastic achievements. A senior at Lawrence majoring in violin performance, Roemer is a 2011 graduate of Roseville Area High School.

George Fisk of New Brighton, a senior at Irondale High School, was recently named a recipient of a National Merit Scholarship. Fisk reportedly will be studying to enter the actuarial science field.

Denison University student Ann Lindberg of Arden Hills has been inducted into the Denison chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest academic honorary. Election to Phi Beta Kappa generally takes place during senior year but exceptions are made for a small number of deserving juniors including Lindberg, who is a member of the class of 2016.

Mikayla Huesman of Mounds View, a sophomore environmental studies major and a minor in English at Ripon College recently was inducted into the Sigma Tau Delta honor society.

Kathryn DeZellar of Shoreview was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. DeZellar was initiated at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
