Crews officially began construction on Monday, July 13 on “The Cambric,” an affordable-rate senior apartment building on East Seventh Street at the corner of Bates Avenue in Dayton’s Bluff.

The four-story building, a project of Minnesota-based developer Dominium, will be constructed on a steep hill near where the new Mississippi Market food co-op is being built.

The building will provide 113 affordable rental units to people 55 and older. The developer hopes seniors living in the area will relocate to the new building, instead of having to leave their neighborhood and moving to other parts of St. Paul or the suburbs.

The project saw some neighborhood opposition -- Dayton’s Bluff homeowners were concerned the project was too large, and would dwarf surrounding buildings. Despite those concerns, the project was approved by city staff and the St. Paul City Council, and is now underway.
