Just in time for August, the swimming beaches at Long Lake Regional Park in New Brighton and Tony Schmidt Regional Park — Lake Johanna — in Arden Hills will be open again, come 2 p.m. Friday, July 31.

Following bacteria testing on July 28, the beaches were closed the next day beause of high levles of E. coli bacteria found in the water. Ramsey County Parks and Recreation said in a release that heavy rains in the days prior to July 28 could have raised the levels of bacteria.

E. coli is quite hazardous; it can cause severe abdominal cramps, bloody diarrhea and vomiting, as well as kidney failure in children and older adults.

Had the beaches not been cleared by follow-up testing conducted July 30, they would have been closed through the first weekend of August and retested on Aug. 4, according to the parks and recreation department.
