Roseville senior competes at state wrestling tournament

Hsinku Lay gets 2nd trip to the ‘X’

Roseville Area High School senior Hsinku Lay closed out his prep wrestling career with his second appearance in the state tournament. Lay went 1-2 at 170 pounds at the event held Feb. 25-27 at Xcel Energy Center.

Lay opened the tournament with a 9-6 victory over Rochester John Marshall junior Elijah Hollins.

His second-round match was against Apple Valley senior Mark Hall, who was trying to become the first Minnesota prep wrestler to win six individual state titles. Hall pinned Lay in 1:42 and went on to capture the championship.

The loss dropped Lay into the third-place bracket, where he faced Minneapolis Washburn senior Marcus Placide. Like Lay, Placide’s first loss of the tournament came via a fall against Hall.

Placide bounced back from the loss to beat Lay 15-2 and then lost in overtime in the next round.

Lay finished the season with a record of 25-13. He qualified for state by finishing second at the Section 4, Class 3A tournament. Lay advanced to the championship final before losing to Rowan Morgan of Mounds View and then had to wrestle a true-second match to make state. He beat Stillwater’s AJ Laudet with a first-period pin to qualify.

As a junior, Lay made state at 160 pounds and but wrestled just one match. He lost in the first round and did not qualify for wrestlebacks.
