St. Anthony baseball championship reunion

Back in 2006, the St. Anthony Village High School baseball roster included five sophomores, not exactly the formula for a championship team. That’s what ended up happening, however, as the Huskies came together to capture the Class AA state championship.

When the 2016 version of the Huskies hosts DeLaSalle on April 21, there will be more than just the game going on that night. St. Anthony is hosting a reunion of that 2006 title team.

A number of players from the 2006 team are expected to attend and the festivities include a pregame program honoring the championship team. There is also going to be a barbecue on Palm Porch and a highlight video following the game.

The 2006 team started off the season 6-0 and finished the regular season 17-3. After a rout in the first round of the section playoffs, St. Anthony won a pair of one-run games over Rush City and Brooklyn Center to reach the section final.

Back in those days, the section final was a best-of-three series between the two subsection champions. St. Anthony and Montgomery-Lonsdale met for the section crown and the Huskies swept the series with victories of 14-4 and 11-1.

In the state tournament, St. Anthony beat previously-undefeated Roseau, Winona Cotter and 2005 state champion Paynesville to claim the title and finish the season 25-3.

The 2016 Huskies who host DeLaSalle entered this week with a record of 2-2. They opened the season with a 2-1 loss to St. Paul Highland Park on April 6 and then beat Cambridge-Isanti 7-3 on April 11 and St. Paul Academy 4-2 on April 12. St. Anthony wrapped up the first two weeks with a 13-4 loss to Orono on April 15.

Next week, St. Anthony hosts St. Paul Como Park on April 25 and travels to Cannon Falls on April 28 before opening Tri-Metro Conference play on April 29 at Columbia Heights.
