Familiar foe awaits Irondale in football playoff opener

Home playoff games have been few and far between in recent years for the Irondale High School football team. The Knights have their first one in three years this week.

Irondale, seeded third despite winning only two games this season, hosts sixth-seeded Park Center in the first round of the Section 5AAAAA tournament on Tuesday.

It will be Park Center’s second visit to Wendt Stadium in a six-day span. Irondale and the Pirates closed out the regular season with a Suburban Red District match-up on Oct. 19. The Knights came away with a 28-13 victory in that game.

In the week-eight win, Irondale got a big game from the tandem of quarterback Brendan White and wide receiver Sean Sutherlin. White threw a pair of touchdown passes to Sutherlin and finished with 228 yards on 15-of-29 passing.

Sutherlin caught seven passes for 133 yards and the touchdowns he caught covered 45 and 30 yards.

Also getting in on the touchdown scoring for the Knights was running back Deandre Clarke, who ran for scores of two and one yard in the second half. He finished with 80 rushing yards on 22 carries.

Defensively, Irondale held the Pirates to two touchdowns and finished with three interceptions. Joshua Natere picked off two Park Center passes and Ducan Osindo finished with one interception.

Park Center enters Tuesday’s game looking for its second victory of the season. The Pirates opened the season with a 35-7 defeat of Bloomington Kennedy but then lost their next seven games.
