Winter Fun Fest

Visit Harmon Park, 230 Bernard St. W., on Saturday, Feb. 25, from 1 to 6 p.m. for West St. Paul’s Winter Fun Fest.

There’ll be activities for the whole family, including a live DJ, fire pits, dog sled rides, ice skating, magic show, fireworks, and more. 

There’ll be a grand prize drawing of a 60-inch TV right before the fireworks show at about 6 p.m. and entrants must be present to win. There is no fee to enter the prize drawing, but people must pick up a button and entry form at area merchants: Anytime Fitness, Camelot Cleaners, Cardinal Corner, Drake Bank, Fast Signs, Napa Auto Parts, Pace’s Sinclair, Plaza TV & Appliance, R&B Liquor, the 5-9 Grill and Tap, the UPS Store, Twin Cities Magic and Costume, City Hall and YMCA. 


Storytime for babies

On Tuesday, Feb. 21 from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m., there’ll be stories, songs, bounces and playtimes at this storytime for children newborn to 24 months and their caregivers.

Stories at Lawshe Memorial Museum

The Dakota County Historical Society and South St. Paul Public Library are collaborating for a special storytime series highlighting events from the area’s past through stories and activities for toddlers and preschoolers. 

Taking place on Tuesday, Feb. 21, from 10:15 to 11 a.m., siblings and daycare groups are welcome. Lawshe Memorial Museum is located at 130 Third Ave. N.

TED Talk discussions

Ted Talk videos featuring expert speakers will be the focus of a program at Thompson Park Activity Center from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21.

The first 20 minutes will be spent watching a popular pre-selected TED Talk video. Then facilitator Tom Johnson will lead a discussion by posing questions to get the conversation started and the group will do the rest. 

No registration needed. Thompson Park Activity Center is located at 1200 Stassen Lane, West St. Paul. 

Suggested donation of $1 will be collected at the door. 


Legal assistance of Dakota County

Receive a free 30-minute consultation on Tuesday, Feb. 21, from a volunteer attorney regarding family law matters, such as divorce, child custody, child support, visitation, paternity issues, spousal maintenance and domestic abuse.

This clinic is a joint program of Legal Assistance of Dakota County, the Dakota County Family Court and the Dakota County Law Library. Call 651-438-8102 to schedule an appointment. 

Appointments run from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the West St. Paul Library, 199 Wentworth Ave. E.


Wintering Birds

What resilient birds are out and about on winter days and nights? How do they manage to survive out there? 

The Dodge Nature Center staff will lead a hike in search of these intrepid winged creatures on Saturday, Feb. 25. 

The event runs from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and will begin at Dodge Nature Center, 365 Marie Ave. W., West St. Paul. 

Cost is $7 per person or $20 for a family. Pre-registration is required.

Heritage Society Lunch & Learn

On Tuesday, Feb. 21, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., the DARTS Heritage Society will host a program on how to set up a will or trust and what probate means. Lunch will be included.

Teen Sewing Workshop

On Tuesday, Feb. 21, kids ages 10 to 16 will learn basic sewing skills and make their own project to take home at a monthly sewing class at Inver Grove Heights Library, 8098 Blaine Ave. E.

Organize images, recipes, quotes and other interests on the Internet on your own virtual “pin board.” 

This class at Thompson Park Activity Center on Tuesday, Feb. 28, will navigate folks through the world of Pinterest, starting with an explanation of what Pinterest is, and then help them begin to create their own boards, learn how to pin, “like” other pins, message and much more. 

Participants are asked to create their own Pinterest account before coming to class or come 30 minutes early to learn how to create an account and download the app. 

The instructor will be Carole Scott, and the class will run from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Star of the North Jr. Readers

Did you know Minnesota has a book award for picture books? It’s called the Star of the North Book Award and is awarded annually based on votes from kids. 

Join the South St. Paul Library, 106 Third Ave. N., as they read through the 2016-17 nominees and complete fun activities for each book. 

On Wednesday, Feb. 22, from 10:30 to 11 a.m., kids ages 3 to 8 will read “Night Animals” by Gianna Marino. Registration is required. Call 651-554-3240 for more information.
