Area athletes compete in state ski meets
The high school competitive skiing season came to a close last week with the Alpine and Nordic state meets on back-to-back days at Giants Ridge in Biwabik. Two Review-area schools sent competitors to those meets.
Zach Slaviero closed out his Hill-Murray skiing career by competing in the state Alpine meet on Feb. 15. Making his second state-meet appearance, Slaviero, a senior, finished 13th overall.
Slaviero posted a two-run time of 1:19.96. His time of 40.21 seconds on the Red run was the 28th-fastest and he improved to 13th-best on the Blue run with a time of 39.75 seconds.
Last year as a junior, Slaviero finished in 31st place in a time of 1:15.52.
The individual championship this year went to Northfield/Cannon Falls’ Elliott Boman, who won with a time of 1:14.53. Boman was also the 2015 state champion.
The boys team championship went to Minnetonka.
Tartan’s CeCe Boyle participated in her third and final Nordic ski state on Feb. 16. She improved her time and final place in the standings each year.
In her final go last week, Boyle finished 48th overall with a combined time of 36 minutes, 16.7 seconds. Her freestyle time was 17 minutes, 53 seconds and she completed the classic race in 18 minutes, 23.7 seconds.
Boyle finished 111th in her first state meet as a sophomore in 2015. Her time that year was 43 minutes, 27.8 seconds. In 2016, she jumped up to 78th place with a time of 38 minutes, 52.6 seconds.
Ely senior Erin Bianco won the girls’ pursuit title with a total time of 32 minutes, 20 seconds. Bianco’s performance also helped Ely win the team championship with 413 points. Robbinsdale Armstrong was second at 394 points and Minneapolis Southwest took third with 368 points.
