Now that winter is approaching and road construction season is beginning to wrap up, the Minnesota Department of Transportation wants to know what residents think about yet another road project.

MnDOT is planning to add a third lane to eastbound Highway 10 stretching from Mounds View to Arden Hills.

The department announced an upcoming open house for the public to learn about the proposal, as well as share thoughts and ask questions.

The new third lane on eastbound Highway 10 would run between Interstate 35W and County Road 96 and cost roughly $2.7 million.

“The new auxiliary lane would help reduce congestion and improve safety along the eastbound highway,” MnDOT said in a statement.

According to a 2015 congestion report conducted by MnDOT, the traffic volume on the southbound I-35W exit lane to eastbound Highway 10 is over capacity for two and a half hours during the peak of the morning commute, creating a bottleneck in the flow of traffic. The congestion extends onto Highway 10 eastbound.

Work on a new lane would also include building a new acceleration lane for Scherer Brothers Lumber Company, replacing the existing one, and straightening Prior Avenue at eastbound Highway 10. A stormwater drainage pond and possible noise walls are also included in the plans.

The open house about the project is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 8, from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Arden Manor Recreation Center, 4605 Prior Ave. in Arden Hills.

According to MnDOT, there will not be a formal presentation, meaning the focus of the event will be more driven by residents.

“The open house is an opportunity for citizens to learn about the proposed project, make comments and ask questions,” MnDOT said, noting there will be displays about the project and staff from MnDOT, Ramsey County and the City of Arden Hills available to answer questions.
