Maplewood Nature Center Events

Maplewood Nature Center & Neighborhood Preserves, 2659 East Seventh Street in Maplewood offers these events: Unless otherwise noted, to register for any of the events below go to www.maplewoodnaturecenter.com and click on the ‘Register Online Go’ button. • Saturday, Dec. 30 — S’more Nature Fun from 1:30 to 3 p.m. for all ages. The cost is $5 per person and registration is needed by Dec. 28. Take a walk or snowshoe down to the pond with the naturalist for a fun exploration then make some S’mores on the campfire. Gluten-free and vegan S’more options are available upon request.

• Saturday Jan. 6, 2018 — Snow Flake Wonders from 1 to 3 p.m. This free drop-in event is for all ages. Learn how snowflakes are formed in the sky, and peer at preserved snowflake crystals up close on the microcam. Drop in for a half-hour for self-guiding activities or stay the whole time. Nature Center exhibits and trails will be open. Snowshoes will be available for rent all day if we have snow. No registration necessary. Snowshoe rental: $5/pair.

• Saturday, Jan. 13 — Winter open house: Snowshoes and Tracks from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This free drop-in event is for all ages. Snowshoes rental: $5/pair. Snowshoes available to rent for ages 4 to adult. Learn how to walk, run and turn around on snowshoes. Learn about animal tracks and signs from self-guiding activities. A naturalist will answer nature questions and orient you to the nature center trails. Try wood or metal snowshoes. Wood snowshoes require six or more inches of snow. Sleds will be available for pulling young kids. Dress in layers and wear winter boots. Hot chocolate will be available for all attendees.

• Saturday, Jan. 27 — Fur Trade Heritage from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. This event is best for adults and kids ages 6 and up. The cost is $5 per family and must be prepaid by Jan. 26. We will examine historical replicas of fur trade items, make a spark from flint and steel, drill a hole with a pump drill, try on a capote and moustache and practice your French accent. Small scout groups are welcome. Snowshoe rental will be available afterward.

• Snowshoe rental: Explore Maplewood Nature Center by snowshoe. Sizes are available for children aged 4 up to adults. When we get 4-6 inches of fresh snow come out and enjoy it. Wooden or aluminum snowshoes are available for use on site for $5 per pair. You may also bring your own snowshoes. Call to reserve a time and check conditions.

Maplewood Nature Center is a 40-acre preserve operated by the City of Maplewood and is open Tuesday through Saturday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. The Nature Play Yard adjoins the Visitor Center. Trails wind through oak woods and marsh and are open every day from dawn to dusk. Use of facilities is free of charge.
