The Minnesota Department of Transportation is repaving the roadway. The rest of the closures, weather permitting, will take place through August.

The estimated $200 million project is expected to take four years to complete and will reduce the interstate to two lanes in both directions.

Weekend closures of Interstate 35W in south Minneapolis through the early summer have made latitudinal travel to parts of the Twin Cities a bit more complicated.

As mid-summer approaches, work on I-35W is moving north and into Roseville, promising to make drivers think a bit more about their routes during five upcoming weekend closures of the interstate between Fourth Street in Minneapolis and County Road C.

The first such closure of the 4.5 miles of roadway, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, is scheduled to be from 10 p.m. on Friday, July 13, through 5 a.m. on Monday, July 16, weather permitting.

MnDOT is resurfacing the interstate between Fourth Street and County Road C with aims to extend the pavement’s life and to provide a smoother ride.

The estimated $17 million project will also repave the ramps and frontage roads in the project area as well as replace the signal system at County Road B and Cleveland Avenue, among other things.

There are four more scheduled closures of I-35W out of Roseville, all set around the same timeframe — Friday at 10 p.m. until Monday at 5 a.m. According to MnDOT, the closures are planned for July 27-30, Aug. 3-6, Aug. 10-13 and Aug. 17-20.

One additional weekend closure is planned in September to complete work at the interchange of I-35W, Highway 36 and Cleveland Avenue, though as of press time MnDOT had not set a date for it.

According to MnDOT, there will be no lane or ramp closures during high traffic times such as the Minnesota State Fair or Labor Day Weekend. The project website also notes that there will be noise associated with the work in the project area, including all day and overnight.

More I-35W work

is coming

As work on I-35W comes to a close south of County Road C, crews will begin prepping the interstate north of the county road for lane additions that are expected to take some four years to complete.

MnDOT is adding MnPASS Express Lanes to both northbound and southbound I-35W between County Road C and Lexington Avenue in Blaine, and will also be repaving the interstate through roughly the same area, with major work beginning in the spring of 2019 and continuing until the fall of 2022.

The interstate will be reduced to two lanes in both directions during the work, according to MnDOT.

The estimated $200 million project will also include bridge work and a number of temporary traffic management options on surface streets throughout the project corridor to ease the expected congestion associated with the work. Many of the temporary changes are planned for the Roseville and New Brighton areas, including on County Road D and Old Highway 8.

Crews will also install seven new noisewalls in the project area, according to MnDOT. The project’s goals are to improve the roadway and to ease congestion long-term through the corridor.

For more information about this project and for an upcoming, detailed project schedule that is expected to be posted this fall, go to www.dot.state.mn.us/metro/projects/i35wroseville.
