NEWSBRIEF; New Brighton wins grant to create mural at community center

The City of New Brighton has won a community arts grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council to paint a mural on the west wall of the New Brighton Community Center. The mural will be approximately 15 feet tall by 30 feet wide, and is scheduled to be complete by July 15.

Pamela Sukhum, a local muralist, will work together with RISE, Community Partners with Youth, Northeast Bank and other volunteers to create the artwork. It will be designed to promote equity, inclusion and a sense of community for the residents of New Brighton.

The mural will be a part of Sukhum’s “The Beautiful Project,” which has worked with people from all around the world to inspire and empower communities. The project combines perspectives from community members after they’ve been asked the simple question of what they find to be beautiful in their own world. Participants contribute to the content with their own piece of art and Sukhum creates the outline for the final piece using those contributions. After the outline is complete, all participants and volunteers work together to fill in the painting using techniques and theory taught by Sukhum.

Residents wanting to get involved with the mural should contact Craig Schlichting at 651-638-2056 or craig.schlichting@newbrightonmn.gov.
