Annual maintenance, renovations at New Brighton Community Center

City will offer free fitness classes in Hansen Park during four-day closure

The end of Labor Day means the start of a new school year, as well as the start of the New Brighton Community Center’s annual four-day shutdown. From Sept. 3 through 6, the entire building — including the library and indoor playground — will be closed for maintenance and minor remodeling work.

As a substitute, the center will offer exercise classes for residents in Hansen Park from Aug. 26 through Sept. 12.

According to Jennifer Fink, New Brighton’s director of parks and recreation, this four-day period has typically been used for the center’s annual shutdown because it is the lowest-use time of year.

During the closure, staff members clean carpets, power wash high chairs and other surfaces, touch up paint and “scrape gum from the many places we find it,” said Fink.

A couple of larger projects will also start during this year’s shutdown, including a refinishing of the gym floor and the installation of a new wood floor in the fitness studio.

Both projects are scheduled to start Aug. 26 and last through Sept. 13, during which time both the gym and fitness studio will be closed to the public. According to Fink, once complete, the studio’s new wood floor will allow for a greater variety of classes — including Zumba — and provide improved cushioning.

The only other project that will take place outside the confines of the four-day shutdown is a replacement of cabinets in the senior activity room, which Fink said would increase storage capacity. This will start Sept. 2 and finish by the end of the month. According to Fink, the room will remain open and all work will occur outside of program times.

Other minor improvements taking place over the shutdown include replacement of the ceiling tiles in the community room, replacement of two treadmills and a replacement of the toddler ball pit.

In total, all renovations will add up to approximately $120,000.

During the shutdown, and while the gym and fitness room floors are being redone, the community center is offering a series of free, pop-up fitness classes from Aug. 26 through Sept. 12 at the Hansen Park Neighborhood Center, located at 1555 Fifth St. NW.

Classes include cardio, Pilates, tai chi and more; they’re free and open to the public. For a complete schedule of classes, search “New Brighton Parks & Recreation” on Facebook.
