NEWSBRIEF: Scam targets winners of ‘Readers’ Choice’ awards

It’s no secret who the winners of Lillie Suburban Newspapers Readers’ Choice awards are — each year they’re printed in the newspaper and listed online.

That information is useful to the community and recognizes the businesses that readers love, but it’s also useful to scammers.

Recently, a Lillie News ad executive was informed by two of her recent readers’ choice winners that they’d been contacted by a third party asking for cash so they could receive their award.

This is a scam, reported on previously by the Better Business Bureau and experienced by other newspapers, notably the Hernando Sun, a community paper in Florida, which in August published a story detailing its own difficulties with scammers.

There is no fee to receive your Readers’ Choice award from Lillie News, so if someone tells you otherwise, it’s a scam.
