Boys hockey: St. Thomas stops Pioneers to gain share of CSC lead 

The Hill-Murray Pioneers took their number one state ranking and 6-0 Classic Suburban Conference leading—14-2 overall—boys’ hockey records into the St. Thomas ice arena Jan. 23.
When a couple of hours elapsed and they emerged for the ride back home, Hill-Murray no longer was all alone atop the CSC.
St. Thomas had inflicted them with a 4-2 defeat that left them tied with the Cadets with identical 6-1 records.


Packers pack up victory at North in girls hockey

The South St. Paul Packers came to Polar Arena Dec. 7 to face off with the North Polars in the opening game for both in girls’ Classic Suburban Conference hockey. 
In a display of dexterity and superior puck movement—the Packers out shot North 39-25—South St. Paul rode the bus home and across the river with a 4-1 victory in their collective duffel bags. 


Football: South St. Paul ousts Hill-Murray

At the jam-packed Packer Stadium Friday, Nov. 1, South St. Paul tickled its fans when it ended the season for the Hill-Murray Pioneers with an 18-point, Section 4AAAA victory. The win lifted the Packers into the state football tournament, which begins Thursday, Nov. 7.
The Packers scored the first points of the game in the second quarter. Marco Freeman broke through the line and put six points on the board with a 35-yard gallop into the Hill-Murray end zone. Nick Ricci added the point after and it was 7-0 South St. Paul.

Odds of 3-to-1 are never good when they’re not in your favor.
Such was the case for the Tartan Titans Saturday, Oct. 26, when the St. Thomas Academy Cadets came to Oakdale for a football confrontation in Section 5AAAAA.
St. Thomas utilized three running backs against the Titans’ ace Keenen Bellaphant and came out on top of a 35-14 win.


Football: Tartan tops Mahtomedi in OT; Hill-Murray routs St. Louis Park; South St. Paul rolls over North

In a game that had more unlikely scenarios than a deadlocked Congress, the Tartan Titans rebounded from a 21-41 loss at the hands of the South St. Paul Packers a week ago, and put a hurt on the Mahtomedi Zephyrs Oct. 4.
In an unlikely and what had to be thought by many to be a huge Classic Suburban Conference (CSC) upset, the Tartan Titans went into a disheartening overtime session, and went on to post a 23-20 victory.

Caitlyn Russell, an Inver Grove Heights resident attending Cretin-Derham Hall High School, has been named to the St. Paul Area Athena Awards.

The awards are given to young women who excel in athletics, academics and leadership.


Red Wing ends Packers’ late-season surge

The South St. Paul High School girls hockey team closed out its season last Saturday with a 3-2 loss to Red Wing in the Class A state tournament third-place game.


Warroad downs South St. Paul, 4-1 in Class A girls hockey tournament semifinals

The penalty kill was a big factor in South St. Paul's upset victory over Warroad in the state semifinals a year ago.
