Fort Snelling celebrates the Fourth

Spend the day celebrating our nation's independence as people did during the 1800s at Historic Fort Snelling, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, July 4. Hear the roar of cannon salutes, listen to rousing patriotic speeches, watch a special theatrical presentation put on by the fort's soldiers, witness a military dress parade, hear patriotic and military fife and drum music, try your hand at period games, and so much more.

Independence Day was one of the few holidays celebrated throughout America during the 19th century. Historically the day was marked at the fort by a military parade, patriotic speeches, the release of all prisoners in the guardhouse, festive meals and general carousing that typified American patriotic celebrations. Visit Historic Fort Snelling, 200 Tower Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55111, for the largest historic celebration of Independence Day in the Twin Cities. Fee: $10 adults, $8 seniors and college students, $5 children ages 6-17; free for children age 5 and under and MHS members. Call 612-726-1171 with questions.
