IGH volunteers help clean up Gun Club Lake

The Dakota County Sheriff's Office Underwater Recovery Team coordinated a cleanup of Gun Club Lake and Lion's Park in Inver Grove Heights on Sept. 16.

An estimated 850 pounds of garbage were removed from the lake bottom and shoreline. Interesting items found on the lake bottom include a 40-gallon water heater, bed frame, four automobile tires and a bucket seat from an automobile.

Volunteers participating included family members of the Underwater Recovery Team, scuba divers from the Inver Grove Heights Fire Department, Scuba Daddy's Dive Shop in Burnsville and students from the School of Environmental Studies located at the Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley.

The event was part of a larger, international cleanup in which over 300,000 volunteers participated in removing trash from waters and shorelines in over 100 countries.

The Dakota County Sheriff's Office Underwater Recovery Team has participated in this event since 2001, collecting hundreds of pounds of garbage from Dakota County lake bottoms and shorelines.

This year, a total of 41 volunteers participated, including 16 scuba divers.
