Muscala ties school block record

Former Roseville Area High School basketball standout Mike Muscala has put together quite a string of games in recent weeks for the Bucknell University men's hoops squad. Earlier in January, Muscala picked up a handful of player-of-the-week awards for his play and last week he added his name to an ever-growing list of school records.

In a game Jan. 26 against Lehigh, Muscala tied the school record for blocks in a game in helping lead the Bison to an 81-68 victory. Muscala swatted eight Lehigh field-goal attempts to equal the single-game mark set three other times but not since 1993. Muscala also recorded his 100th career block in the contest to become only the fourth Bison to reach that plateau.

The victory was Bucknell's ninth straight but that streak came to an end on Saturday in a 90-70 loss to Army. Despite seeing its win streak snapped, Bucknell still holds a one-game lead over American in the chase for the Patriot League regular-season championship.

Earlier in January, Muscala was named the Bison Athlete of the Week and the Patriot League Player of the Week following a 75-60 win over American on Jan. 12 and a 74-72 victory over Holy Cross on Jan. 16. In addition to the school and conference awards, Muscala also earned a national honor when he was named the Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week.

Muscala started the week by pouring in a career high 33 points against American and he added 10 rebounds and five blocks. He became just the second player in Bucknell history to record a 30-10-5 game and it was the 28th time in school history where a Bucknell player scored at least 30 points and pulled down at least 10 boards.

Four days later, Muscala went back to work against Holy Cross to the tune of 23 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks. The baker's dozen on the glass was another career high but the biggest impact he made came at the end of the game.

With the score tied 72-72, Bucknell set up for the final shot, which ended up going to Muscala. He drained a 19-foot jump shot with 1.4 seconds remaining to give the Bison the victory.

Bucknell begins the second half of the Patriot League schedule Feb. 5 with a home game against Navy. Including the game against the Naval Academy, the Bison have seven regular-season games remaining before heading to the Patriot League playoffs.
