Pioneers looking to revamp football forces

The Hill-Murray Pioneers will be looking toward a number of improvements as they ready themselves for the upcoming football season.

They will get an early test of their prowess in the opener at Mahtomedi, 7 p.m. on Sept. 2.

The Zephyrs are expected to be a strong repeat contender for the Classic Suburban Conference (CSC) title they captured with a 7-0 mark a year ago.

“We will have a strong defensive line and secondary to begin the season,” Hill-Murray head coach Vince Conway said. “On offense we will have quarterback Brady Field, who will be throwing to a strong contingent of wide receivers. If we can stay relatively free of injuries, we should be OK this season.”

In addition to Mahtomedi, coach Conway pegged Sibley and St. Thomas as being the most likely to contend for CSC top honors.

Assisting Conway will be a strong crop of assistants. Billy Joe Pryor, Bryan Farkes, Doug Friberg, Mike Sontag, “Redd” Bresnahan, Alex Cleaveland, Tom Haile and Peter Leo were all listed as assistant coaches on the Hill-Murray roster.

Leading the Pioneers into the CSC grid iron wars will be senior tri-captains Adam Bartie, Brady Field and Tyler Nelson.

In addition to his quarterback duties, Field is expected to see double duty as a linebacker on defense. Bartie, at 215 pounds, is expected to be an anchor as a defensive lineman. The other defensive tackle will be the 235-pound Nelson.

Hill-Murray seniors returning to see action will be Brian Kaufenberg, tight end; Chris Vanderbeek, tackle; Dan Jacobson, line backer; Justin Gorman, line backer; Matt Goetzke, wide receiver; Brian Conway, wide receiver; and Justin Klimek, defensive back.

Backing up the seniors on the varsity will be several juniors headed by B. J. Otto, at tailback and free safety; Tony Dana, line backer; Joe Czaplewski, tight end; Ricky Plemel, defensive back; and Charles Bundy, backup quarterback.
