Rams’ adapted softball teams finish second, fifth

Despite being the undefeated top seed, Mounds View/Irondale/Roseville couldn’t overcome defending state champion South Washington County Saturday afternoon in the title game of the CI adapted softball tournament at Coon Rapids High School. The third-seeded Thunderbolts scored 11 runs in the first three innings en route to a 13-4 victory.

Roseville came into the state tournament a perfect 11-0 and rolled through the first two rounds of the tournament, beating Osseo 11-1 in the quarterfinals and South Suburban 11-1 in the semis.
Sophomore D.J. Fike had a huge game for the Rams in the first round. He pounded out two triples, a home run and drove in three runs. Senior Dan Czerniak got the Rams off to a quick start against Osseo by driving in a run with a double in a 5-run first inning.
Czerniak and Fike were also solid against South Suburban in the second round. Czerniak had four hits and three RBI while Fike added four hits of his own.

Roseville’s offensive attack was cooled off considerably in the championship game, however. The Rams scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to cut into the Thunderbolts’ 6-run lead, but could not get much going the rest of the game.
Fike, Czerniak and Josh Congdon were named to the all-tournament team.
In the PI Division of the tournament, Mounds View/Irondale/Roseville took home the consolation (fifth-place) trophy after beating White Bear Lake 9-5. Freshman David Jaeger and junior Eddie Carlson paced the Rams’ offense. Jaeger had a double and a triple and drove in two runs while Carlson had three RBI.
The Rams earned their way into the fifth-place game by knocking off Osseo 5-2 in the consolation semifinals. Mounds View/Irondale/
Roseville jumped out to a 4-0, first-inning lead thanks in part to a single by Carlson, who finished with two hits and two RBI. The Rams added another run before fending off Osseo’s rally in the seventh, where the Orioles scored three times.
