Speech contest winners advance to area competition

The Discovery Toastmasters Club in Oakdale held its annual fall speech contest on Sept. 13. The contest categories were humorous speech and evaluations. The humorous speech contestant was to deliver a five- to seven-minute prepared speech, with certain criteria including an effective opening, speech body and conclusion. The evaluation contest challenged contestants to give a two- to three-minute oral evaluation of a speech, following certain guidelines that included not only pointing out strengths and weaknesses, but also making specific recommendations for improvement.

The contest winners were Karl Eriksen and Denise Carroll. Eriksen was the winner of the humorous speech contest with his speech entitled, "Don't Worry, Be Happy." Carroll won the evaluation contest by delivering an evaluation on Eriksen's speech. Both winners will advance to the Area 71 contest, which will be held on Thursday, Sept. 28. Runners-up for the Sept. 13 contest were Jonathan Goossen and Paul Jacobs, each of whom competed in both categories.

Discovery Toastmasters Club meets each Wednesday, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Imation/Kodak Discovery Building in Oakdale, just east of Highway 5 and Interstate 694. Visitors are always welcome. For more information, please visit the club Web site at www.discoverytm.freetoasthost.net.
