River Heights Charter School adds two grades
River Heights Charter School, 60 E. Marie Ave., West St. Paul, a tuition-free, grades 9-12 public school, will offer instruction to 7th- and 8th-graders starting this fall.

"We feel that project-based learning is a great opportunity for students grades 7-12 and we're ready to expand grade levels," said Jane Davin, the school's director.

Davin, hired earlier this summer, is extremely impressed with the quality of the River Heights school program after just three years. Students are "really proud" of all the projects they have produced, she said.

"Students seem to really enjoy project-based learning because it allows them the freedom to choose how they will meet goals of the Minnesota state standards. Without bells or 45-minute time blocks normally found in a traditional classroom, students create, think and produce quality projects by discovering and engaging with their true interests."

River Heights has also added a number of new student opportunities for 2007-08, including workshops and research trips in northern Minnesota with the school's new sponsor, Audubon Center.

Songwriting, the music business and Guthrie Theater field trips are among other events, as well as seminars about speaking/grammar practices in the workplace, speech writing, film critiquing, and math and science tutoring.

There will be informational nights throughout the summer for anyone interested in learning more about Project Based Learning at River Heights Charter School. For more information, see www.riverheightscharter.org or call the school at 457-7427.
