A Russian spy who tried to infiltrate the International Criminal Court last summer to gain access to investigations into Russian war crimes in Ukraine was indicted Friday on espionage charges in the United States, where he is accused of living under a false identity for two years. , reports Agerpres.

Sergei Serkazov, 37, worked as an illegal agent of Russian intelligence services under the Brazilian pseudonym Victor Mueller Ferreira, according to a statement by federal prosecutors in Washington.

According to the indictment, he began operating under this identity in Brazil in 2010.

Five years later, he applied to a university in Washington by that name. After being accepted into this institution, he entered the US in 2018 on a student visa.

Until 2020, he lived under this cover, studying international relations while gathering information about Americans he sent to Russian services, according to the office of prosecutor Matthew Graves.

After leaving the US in May 2020, he continued to use his university connections to gain information on US foreign policy.

In April 2022, he sought to be interned at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, Netherlands, and to participate in trials of war crimes in Ukraine targeting Russia.

The Dutch secret services untied him and refused him entry into Dutch territory. He was extradited to Brazil, where he was arrested for fraud and sentenced to 15 years in prison in July.

According to court documents, Moscow accused him of drug trafficking dating back to 2011 and 2013 and sought his extradition.

Last week, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin, accusing him of war crimes in Ukraine.

The ICC issued a warrant for Putin’s arrest on suspicion of the illegal deportation of Ukrainian children and the illegal transfer of people from Ukrainian territory to Russia.
