“The goal of xAI is to understand the true nature of the universe,” the start-up says on its website, without giving further details.
Elon Musk explained on Twitter that xAI’s ambition is to “understand reality.” The site is announcing a Q&A session on Twitter on Friday to discuss this new arrival of artificial intelligence.
According to the state corporate registry, the company was officially incorporated in Nevada in March, but its technology team is located in the San Francisco (California) area. When it was registered, xAI listed Elon Musk as its director.
A few months ago, the billionaire admitted that he had bought large quantities of graphics processing units (GPUs) needed to develop artificial intelligence (AI) software, without revealing what he intended to do with them.
“We are a separate company from X Corp,” the holding company that controls, among others, Twitter, “but we will work closely with X, Tesla and other companies to advance our mission,” the company said on its website.
Elon Musk already controls Tesla, aerospace company SpaceX, Twitter and tunnel construction company The Boring Company and Neuralink, which specializes in neural implants.
According to the site, the xAI team, “led by Elon Musk,” is made up of recognized experts in the field of artificial intelligence, including some from ChatGPT, Google, and Microsoft’s OpenAI.
In an April interview with Fox host Tucker Carlson, Elon Musk said he plans to “create a third option” among AI heavyweights besides Microsoft/OpenAI and Google.
