Emmett TillA family was saddened and appalled that the Motion Picture Academy omitted the film from this tragic and pivotal story in American history…and did so in every Oscar category.
Cousin of Emmett and co-founder of the Emmett Till Legacy Foundation, Deborah WattsTMZ says… The family is terribly disappointed with the “Till” movie and its lead actress Daniel Didwiller – Who Plays Emmett’s Mother – Did not receive any nominations.
Deborah says Danielle “embodied and delivered the true essence of our cousin, a loving and courageous mother, Mamie Tell Mobley. She reached deeply and poured her heart and soul into the role as she embraced us more intimately than ever before, while transforming into Mamie and bringing her true essence and her story to life.”
As you know, the movie tells the story of Emmett’s 1955 kidnapping and lynching in Mississippi… which sent shockwaves across the country when a photo of his brutally beaten body was released.
The family’s feeling about Danielle being ignored is in line with the social media trend – people are pointing out that no Black woman has been nominated in the Best Actor category…and it wouldn’t be the first time.
Some users noticed Viola Davis Another worthy competitor was her performance in the box office hit ‘The Woman King’.
Moving forward, Deborah says, “The Emmett Till Legacy family and community of supporters will ensure that the legacy and story of Emmett and Mamie continues to be told with or without any awards.”
Danielle hasn’t responded publicly yet — we’ve reached out to her reps, but the truth is, actors rarely say anything about snubs.
