Iranian Foreign Minister, Hosein Amir Abdolahian, said on Thursday that Iran cooperates with Russia in the field of defense, but that his country has not sent weapons and drones against Ukraine, EFE reports, writes Agerpres.
“We have security cooperation with Russia, but our policy is not to send weapons and drones against Ukraine,” a senior Iranian official wrote on his Twitter account.
Iran’s diplomatic chief conveyed the same message in a telephone conversation with the EU’s high representative for foreign policy, Joseph Borrell.
“There is no basis for the claim that we are sending missiles to Russia for use against Ukraine. We oppose the war in Ukraine,” Abdolakhian said, commenting on reports that Iran was supplying Moscow with such weapons.
Abdolahian provided details of his conversation with Borrell shortly before the European Union announced sanctions against individuals and companies in Iran.
European Union member states agreed on Thursday to sanctions against three individuals and a company that supplies Russia with Iranian drones used in Ukraine.
The Iranian government has repeatedly denied sending weapons and especially drones to Russia.
EFE notes that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei praised Iranian drones on Wednesday and said they were “the work of Iran’s best talents and they bring honor to the country,” including satellites, the nuclear industry, the Persian Gulf country that produces them, missiles and vaccines.
