White House national security adviser Jack Sullivan was quoted by Reuters as saying on Tuesday that US officials rejected a plan to hold a referendum in Russian-controlled areas of Ukraine and would never recognize Russian claims to annex parts of Ukraine.

Sullivan also said Washington was aware of reports that Vladimir Putin might order a general mobilization of the population, and said the move would do nothing to undermine Ukraine’s ability to resist Russian aggression.

Sullivan said Moscow led the referendum in the Donbass, Kherson and Zaporizhia and could deploy troops to those areas after suffering heavy losses on the battlefield.

Sullivan qualified for the referendums, which were announced next weekend as being against the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“If this happens, the United States will never recognize Russia’s claims to any of the allegedly annexed parts of Ukraine. We will never recognize this territory as part of Ukraine. We unequivocally reject Russia’s actions,” Sullivan said.
