Lukashenko mocks McDonald’s after fast-food chain announces exit from Belarus / “Thank God they’re leaving”

“We know how to cut bread in half,” Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko joked on Friday over US fast-food group McDonald’s exit from his country, where it will be replaced by a Russian brand, Agerpres reported, citing AFP.

From November 22, McDonald’s fast food in Belarus will operate under the name Vkusno i Tocika, a Russian chain that took over the American group’s restaurants in Russia. No explanation was given.

“Thank God that he left”, Alexander Lukashenko replied during a meeting with employees from the agri-food sector on Friday. “We should do what McDonald’s did,” he said.

“And we know how to cut bread in half and put meat, fries and salad inside,” the Belarusian president said.

The KSB Victory Restaurants franchise, which operates McDonald’s restaurants in Belarus, announced on November 11 that they will soon change their name to Vkusno i Tocika, as in Russia.

The brand’s first restaurants opened their doors in Russia on June 12, replacing McDonald’s, which left the country in response to Russia’s attack on Ukraine, which began on February 24.

Coca-Cola or dozens of other Western brands like H&M and Ikea have done the same.

Belarus was Russia’s only ally in the conflict, making its territory available to the Russian military for an ultimately unsuccessful assault on Ukraine’s capital, Kiev.
