Roh Tae Moon, President of Samsung’s Mobile Business, recently explained The Wall Street Journal Why are foldable phones so important to a company’s business?

Roh said in the report that Samsung’s foldable phones attract three times more brand adapters than regular Samsung Galaxy S phones. This means that people are turning away from other phone manufacturers, be it Apple, Xiaomi or Oppo, and instead buying Samsung phones.

“We consider this a meaningful ratio and a positive sign,” Roh told the Wall Street Journal. “It’s about switches from other brands, not Samsung Galaxy device users switching to another Galaxy device.”

Samsung hopes to make the potential brand switcher “mainstream,” according to its latest earnings statement. Sales of foldable phones aim to outpace sales of its previous flagship smartphone, Galaxy Notein the second half.

Foldable phones remain the fastest growing smartphone product category this year, according to Counterpoint Researchwhich expects foldable phone shipments to grow 73% to 16 million units.

Counterpoint also found that Samsung’s share of the foldable market was 62% in the first half of this year, although no other smartphone makers are shipping foldable devices in as many markets as Samsung. Counterpoint expects Samsung to have 80% of the market in the second half of the year.
