The summer days may be behind us, but the MLB playoff races are getting hotter.
Emotion prevailed Saturday night during the Rays-Orioles game in St. Petersburg as two seats were cleared in the eighth inning of Tampa Bay’s 8-2 win, sending the Rays (59-53) back against Baltimore (59-54). For the final AL wild-Card spot in a half game.
Rise’s Pete Fairbanks wasn’t happy with his late time-call with Robinson Shearinus on the board because he was in the middle of the field. Although house board referee Andy Fletcher appears to be the one who called the time, Fairbanks yelled at Cherinos after hitting him. Cherinos didn’t take her kindly, and suddenly she cleared the seats to engage in some jaw-dropping motions.
“There was a call late, I was offended,” Fairbanks said after the game. According to the Tampa Bay Times. “Apparently I misunderstood who called the time, where it came from. It was obviously the arbiter, not Cherinos. I, you guys know, can be a bit fiery. So I think that may have caused some things (Saturday).”
The two teams will play the rubber game of their three-game series on Sunday afternoon, their last meeting of the season, before the Rays head to The Bronx for a three-game match against the Yankees.
AL wild-Card racing can go down to the wire. Sunday’s The Twins entered a game behind the Rays, while the White Sox went back for two games and the Red Sox returned 4.5. The Blue Jays (61-51) and Mariners (62-53) hold the two main positions in the wild card.
