The Indianapolis Colts and Washington captains have reportedly resolved a dispute over alleged tampering involving retired quarterback Andrew Luck. Turns out the leaders never spoke to Luck or any of his associates, according to a report Monday from ESPN’s Stephen Holder.
Likewise, the Washington Post Mark Musk and Nikki Gabvala It reported on Sunday that the leaders were “unlikely to face any sanctions”. A source told them the NFL lacked “enough hard evidence” to implicate the team.
The leaders came into question after a May 6 report from ESPN John Kimwho claimed that the Chiefs “phoned” Luck in the spring of 2022. The report depicted a desperate blob in the quarterback search in Washington, where Luck has been away from the NFL since the 2019 season.
Colts owner Jim Irsay appeared to respond to the report. Since the team still owns the rights to Luck’s contract, it posted a notice about the NFL’s tampering policy via social media:
A day after ESPN’s report and Irsay’s tweet, a dossier appeared The Washington Post reported that the Colts had made a formal request to the NFL for an investigation into possible tampering by the leaders. According to the report, the Colts asked the league to investigate any improper attempts to contact Luck through intermediaries.
For what it’s worth, the conversation between Luck and the leaders may not have been very productive. He unexpectedly retired in 2019, with three years remaining on his contract. The Colts allowed him to keep the entire $24.8 million in signing bonus payments. He was 29 years old at the time, and the team hoped he would return to the sport.
He is 33 years old now, and shows no interest in playing football professionally again. An in-depth profile by ESPN’s Seth Wickersham In December he detailed how he fell in love with the game.
Now is the time for the Colts to turn their attention to former Florida QB Anthony Richardson, who is the fourth overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft. He is Indianapolis’ highest scoring quarterback since Luck was named the starting quarterback in 2012.
