Let me start with a confession: I’m bad at puzzles. KenKen, cryptograms, Rubik’s cubes, never mind: they all make my head hurt. crossword puzzles baffle me; Confusion makes me pass. Finally, I left behind more half-finished mysteries than “unsolved mysteries.”

So when I got the chance to play and review Wordle today for fun – lo and behold! joking! – I was careful. But then again, I also enjoy feeling sorry for myself, so I answered yes.

I decided to start with some self profiling, using the word moron in the first line. When I told editors Judy Tong of this plan, she laughed, noting that it was “the perfect dumb word to start with” because it only has one vowel and it appears twice.

However, I was strangely pleased when I received one letter – R – right in the middle, but in the wrong place. I knew I needed to persevere a bit, though my next attempt, RETRY, was similarly flawed. However, I got a green E in the second slot, and narrowed down the possibilities of R.

However, the third line was a disaster, and one as old as journalism: a typo. I had meant to try LEVER – again, I’m not very good at this – but I misspelled and did LEVEL instead. My E was still green but the rest was gray like this newspaper.

I’m starting to panic: I’m not actually going to fail, am I? Why did you agree to do this? Can I back out? Should I…wait…delay?

BAM! My fourth guess saved me, and got me two green letters and a misplaced yellow D. ? – left me with a cache of workable consonants, three vowels and only two letters for locating.

I’m still confused. My mind kept swinging back to high school Spanish: could it be PEDIR? What about seder? No, two E’s again. Was Bidour a word?

Then I saw the C. And this is how – for the first time ever – I saw the answer.

The word of the day is Cedar, which is a noun, According to Webster’s New World College Dictionaryis a coniferous pine tree with needle-like leaves and cones and fragrant, durable wood.

Today’s puzzle Fairly easy.

The pattern of letters in the word of the day is so unique that the answer can be found in six guesses, and the word is familiar, with no letter repeats.
