before them UFC 276 Middleweight FightShawn Strickland suggested he might drop his eye-catching leanings against Alex Pereira, a very accomplished kickboxer. Strickland did not follow through on the proposed game plan and paid a heavy price, suffering a knockout in the first round.
Strickland stuck to his usual style, standing tall and solid and trying to move on. This was unwise against a striker of Pereira’s quality. The Brazilian simply waited patiently while he worked the kicks to the body and led Strickland’s leg.
Strickland never deviated from his technique, continuing to walk forward in the striker’s buzz. When Strickland’s hurried kicks seemed to have a negative effect, Pereira clashed with his hands, landing a large left hook that sent Strickland onto the board. When Strickland tried to get to his feet, he ate his other right hand and smashed against the canvas a second time, this time needing the referee to step in and call for the action to stop.
Pereira is now in the mix for a potential title shot. He has two wins over middleweight king Israel Adesanya in the kickboxing ring, including a brutal knockout.
