German police opened fire on a man who threatened officers with a shovel and an incendiary device during a rally by supporters in the city of Hamburg on Sunday, Reuters reported.

The city’s police said in a post on X that the man was injured and is now receiving medical treatment.

The incident took place in the Sankt Pauli district shortly before the match between Poland and the Netherlands at the Volksparkstadion at 16:00 Roman time.

Supporters’ marches are planned ahead of the matches, and at the time of the incident, a Dutch supporters’ march was underway.

The 2024 European Football Championship kicked off in Germany on Friday evening and will run for a month.
