A 32-year-old Romanian driver who was working in Germany to transport some gold coins from the airport to a precious metals dealer couldn’t resist and stole some worth almost a million euros. The man pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three and a half years in prison. However, the coins are nowhere to be found.
Last year, on May 11, a Romanian truck driver working for a transport company was going to transport several boxes of gold coins from Frankfurt Airport to a gold dealer in Erding. With the help of an accomplice, who has not yet been caught, he exchanged several coins for stones, said prosecutor Sandra Mesch. merkur.de.
The same publication claims that the Romanian and his accomplice were “not very smart” because they didn’t even wear gloves when they replaced the coins with stones.
Therefore, the Roman was immediately betrayed by the traces of DNA left on the stones.
Also, when examining the Romanian’s mobile phone, investigators found a photo of the coins taken on the day of the theft.
During the investigation, the Romanian did not reveal the identity of the accomplice. Also, none of the stolen coins were recovered.
