Deion Sanders arrived in Boulder on Sunday He was officially announced as the next head coach of Colorado State.
He came with a very clear message for the current Buffaloes players as well.
Midfielder Sanders – his son, Shedeur – has already been picked and they need to get to the transfer portal.
“It’s not going to be any more of a mess that these amazing fans, the student body and some of your parents have endured for probably two decades. I’m coming, and when I get here, it’s going to change,” Sanders said to a room full of Colorado players. In the gate and do whatever you’re going to get because the more of you jump in, the more space you save.”
Hearing a coach blatantly tell a room full of players that they better leave isn’t something that happens often. While it’s hard to imagine the entire returning team choosing to move elsewhere, Sanders’ Sunday speech certainly pushed at least a few players who had been on the fence over the edge.
He also fully confirmed that Shedeur, his son and current quarterback at Jackson State, will lead the team this coming fall.
Sanders, after his undefeated season, capped off three great years at Jackson State, She chose to jump to Colorado on Saturday night. He compiled a 27-5 record and won two SWAC championships while at Jackson State, including a 43-24 victory in Saturday’s SWAC title game.
Obviously, the Buffaloes need someone like Sanders to revamp their program, too. Colorado fired head coach Carl Durrell earlier this fall after starting 0-5 in his third season. The team finished with a record of 1-11. Colorado has only one winning season to its name since moving to the Pac-12 Conference in 2011.
“There have been a number of highly qualified and impressive candidates interested in becoming Colorado’s next head football coach, but none of them have the pedigree, knowledge, and ability to connect with student-athletes like Deion Sanders,” Colorado Athletic Director Rick George He said. “Coach Prime will not only energize our fan base, but I am confident he will return our program to national prominence while leading a team of high quality and high character.”
There is one minor snag in George’s plan to reshape his football program around Coach Prime.
He didn’t have the money lined up yet.
