Sounders vs. Rapids, full-time: Sounders win 4-0

full time: Jordan Morris scored twice while Cristian Roldan and Heber added individual goals in the Sounders’ 4-0 win over Rapids on Sunday. It was Morris’ first multi-goal game since August 30, 2020, and the Sounders’ most patchy win since beating the Vancouver Whitecaps by the same score on June 14, 2022.

Sounders 4, Rapids 0: Jordan Morris added a second goal, again taking advantage of a defensive weakness. He converted again from close range after Nicolas Lodeiro’s corner kick had been bounced off several different players.

SOUNDERS 3, RAPIDS 0Héber opened his Sounders account, converting a close-range shot after the defense failed to deal with Nicolás Lodeiro’s cross.

Volume 2, Rapids 0: Jordan Morris headed in a loose ball from close range as he stumbled, converting a chance created when Nicolas Lodero’s cross was deflected wide of a defender.

SOUNDERS 1, RAPIDS 0Cristian Roldan converted the rebound after his first shot was saved by Jordan Morris.

lineups: Joao Paulo returned to the starting line-up and Hiber instead of Raul Ruidias, but other than that, the Sounders team uses the same line-up that it used against Al-Ahly.

The Seattle Sounders kicked off their 15th MLS season against an opponent they have completely dominated over the years, especially at home. In 18 games against the Rapids at Lumen Field, the Sounders have a 15-2-1 advantage, the most recent loss coming in 2016.

Both teams will be looking to bounce back from disappointing 2022 campaigns. Of course, the Sounders missed the playoffs for the first time in 14 years. The Rapids finished one place ahead of the Sounders in the standings, but were still four points shy of the postseason after allowing the second most goals (57) in the Western Conference.

The Sounders will likely field the same 4-2-3-1 they’ve used for most of Brian Schmetzer’s tenure, but with a few tactical tweaks that should give them a fresh look when they’re in possession. The Rapids are expected to line up in a 4-3-3 formation that focuses on pressing forward.

  • The Sounders are 8-6-0 in all of their regular season openers during the MLS era, including a 1-0 loss to Nashville last year.
  • In addition to missing the playoffs for the first time in their MLS existence, the Sounders set a franchise record with 17 losses. Of these, 15 had only one goal.
  • The Rapids were just 1-13-5 in all competitions on the road last season.
  • Diego Rubio set a Rapids Series scoring record with 23 goals (16 goals, 7 assists) last season.
