The extreme temperatures this summer make us think about the best solutions to stay hydrated. Here is a very hydrating drink. Water is only at the bottom of the rankings.
A study by the University of St. Andrews, a native of Scotland, researched various drinks to find out which drinks people should avoid altogether when trying to quench their thirst.
During the study, it was found that water, calm and bright, does a great job of hydrating people, but it lacks some key ingredients to actually work effectively in the human body. That is, plain water contains only fat, salt and sugar.
Ronald Maughan, a professor at the School of Medicine in St. Petersburg, explained. Andrews and study author, for CNNThe reason why water is not the most beneficial drink is because of the way our bodies digest drinks.
He explained that when we drink water, it immediately empties from the stomach and is absorbed into the bloodstream. Many times, we urinate excess fluid.
“If you drink water and within two hours, your urine output is very high and your urine is clear, that means water is not being retained properly in the body,” David Nieman, professor of public health at Appalachian State University and director of the Human Performance Laboratory at the North Carolina Research Campus, said of a previous study on hydration.
However, other drinks are absorbed more slowly due to their nutrient content. And that’s where the milk comes in.
According to the team, milk’s fat, protein, salt and sugar content help coat the stomach when a person drinks it. It then absorbs water at a slower rate, allowing people to stay hydrated longer.
One of the most hydrating drinks ever
In total, after monitoring the urine output of 72 healthy, physically active male volunteers between the ages of 18 and 35, the team was able to classify 13 different beverages. Skim milk came out on top.
- Skimmed milk
- Oral rehydration solutions
- Full fat milk
