A study by the University of St. Andrews, a native of Scotland, researched various drinks to find out which drinks people should avoid altogether when trying to quench their thirst.

However, other drinks are absorbed more slowly due to their nutrient content. And that’s where the milk comes in.

According to the team, milk’s fat, protein, salt and sugar content help coat the stomach when a person drinks it. It then absorbs water at a slower rate, allowing people to stay hydrated longer.

In total, after monitoring the urine output of 72 healthy, physically active male volunteers between the ages of 18 and 35, the team was able to classify 13 different beverages. Skim milk came out on top.
