Casas, 22, was selected by Boston in the first round of the 208th draft, ranked 26th overall. He landed a short showing in rookie ball that year and jumped into A-ball to start 2019. He hit 19 home runs at Greenville Drive while cutting .254/.349/.472, spawning wRC+136 and got a short promotion To High-A to end the year.
After such a solid performance in his first full season as a professional, baseball team America ranked No. 70 in the sport. Of course, that year’s minor league seasons were canceled due to the pandemic, which prevented Casas from playing organized ball that season. In 2021, he split his time between Double-A and Triple-A, hitting 14 wreckers and slashing .279/.394/.484. He walked in 15.4% of his board appearances while making only 19.1% of them, producing WRC+141.
After such an excellent season, he jumped to 19th place on the BA’s 2022 Best Odds list and looked like a candidate for his first major league appearance this season. The Red Sox stuck with Dalbec as their first starting man at the start of the year and Casas were left off the table when he picked up an ankle injury in May, returning to Worcester at the end of July. Red Sox fans have called for the move for some time, not only because of Casas’ strong showing, but also because of Dalbec’s struggles. After making 25 home races last year and cutting .240/.298/.494 for the WRC+ index from 107, this year he slipped back to a .211/.282/.363 offering. Based on these disappointing results, he and Cassas will change places, with Dalbec descending into the palace to try to get back on track.
